There are plenty of other sports activities locally - for example Quinta da Gomeira adjoins Cabanas Sport club with tennis courts etc

For something completely different, look at www.kitesurfeolis.com which is based in Cabanas. They rent equipment and do lessons for windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, small boats etc
For example
Kitesurf lessons - Course (levels 1, 2 and 3) - 2 afternoons 175€ (about 10 hours)
1 hour alone with the instructor 35€ - all the equipment and rescue boat included

and for Windsurfing - basic course - 2 afternoons 125€ (about 8 hours)
1 hour alone with the instructor 30€ - again all the equipment supplied
